Literati by William Allister
Literati

This image celebrates the thinkers and spiritual seekers (the 'literati') of the east who would withdraw from the concerns of daily life and seek inner peace and knowledge.

The artist, William Allister, was a distinguished Canadian writer and artist who had an adventurous life which spanned the globe. His most life-altering experience was 3 years spent during WW2 as a Japanese prisoner-of-war. After liberation he married, raised a family and thrived in different creative fields, but the memories of the prisoner camp never faded. It took a trip back to Japan in the 80's to lay the ghosts to rest and acquire a measure of serenity. His work thereafter was a celebration of peace and joy and a combination of eastern and western technique and subject matter. William Allister passed away in 2009, beloved and at peace; we feel both pleased and privileged to have one of his works in the gallery.
